With the sudden and substantial surge in popularity in the kids tablet market, it isn’t just toy manufacturers getting into the increasingly prolific market.
Bill Gates once famously predicted that he could see a PC
in every household, a prediction that has long been proven correct and then
some. And the same prediction could have been used for computer tablets aimed specifically
at kids who seem to becoming one of the most popularly used toys across the
globe.
And whilst these tablets were originally perceived as
toys, created by leading toy manufacturers like VTech and LeapFrog, it seems
the big names in the electronic market are keen to get in on the act, including
Amazon.
Amazon are most popularly known for owning the largest
online retail shop in the world, but they’re also the people behind one of the
most famous tablets in the world – the Kindle, originally designed to be an
e-reader but has since developed into a pretty decent all-round tablet.
And now, following in the footsteps of Samsung, they’ve
released one of their adult tablets but with a kiddie makeover, the Kindle Fire
HD Kids Edition. In this case this means a software overhaul and a new, robust
casing to help protect against accidental drops.
Dubbed the Kindle for Kids, the innards of this latest
kids tablet is identical to the latest budget-friendly adult release the Kindle
HD Fire 6 (or 7 if you get the larger screen) meaning it’s going to be
superfast for a kids tablet, wiping the floor with tablets like the Innotab and
LeapPad devices.
Basically this isn’t a toy at all, rather an adult tablet
that’s been made to look like a toy and to appeal to children. This tablet
features a 1.5Ghz processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, meaning it’s
probably around 5 times as powerful as your first ever PC! The touchscreen
measures in at 1280x800 resolution and the vibrant display makes graphics and
videos really stand out. Display-wise, Kindle have – along with Apple’s gadgets
– been one of the top tablets vibrant, crystal clear screens.
Okay so as you’d expect you get a rechargeable battery,
inbuilt Wi-Fi, inbuilt camera and touchscreen capabilities. However two things
are included with the Kindle for Kids that should really make every parent
scrambling to their own – firstly a year’s subscription to Amazon FreeTime
which means you can download from an almost limitless number of apps, games,
videos and other cool stuff – meaning purchasing extra software to run on the
Kindle isn’t [necessarily] necessary.
Secondly you get 2 years accidental insurance included in
the price. This is usually sold separately and can be quite expensive, but
Amazon have stated they will have a “no questions” policy which is a
really great deal indeed, given many parents may be
reluctant to hand over what is essentially an adult tablet over to a child.
The Kindle for Kids has made it onto TopKidsToys.com’s
list of the best tablets during the Christmas 2014 period.
We can’t wait to see how popular the Kindle for Kids is
going to be this year. We have a feeling it’s going to be leading the way in
the children’s tablet market. Only time will tell.
